Cleveland, Ohio – Severe storms are expected to intensify across Northeast Ohio and push into northwest Pennsylvania late this afternoon, posing an immediate threat to travel and safety through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, an enhanced risk (level 3 of 5) is in place for cities including Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, and extending into Erie, Pennsylvania. Storms are expected to develop by late afternoon and strengthen between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., with damaging wind gusts up to 80 mph and hail up to 2 inches in diameter possible.
The highest risk zone stretches along the I-90 corridor into northwest Pennsylvania, where storms may organize into a line capable of producing widespread wind damage. A few tornadoes cannot be ruled out, especially in areas from Ashtabula to Erie.
Rainfall totals could exceed 1 inch in localized areas, creating brief flooding on roads and low-lying areas during peak travel hours.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Avoid unnecessary travel during the evening if storms are ongoing.
The severe threat will diminish later tonight as storms move east, but additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
