Palo Duro Canyon, Texas – Visitors in Palo Duro Canyon face dangerous heat conditions Thursday afternoon as temperatures climb to 105°F, increasing the risk of heat-related illness within minutes of exposure.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, with canyon temperatures reaching or exceeding 105 degrees. A Wind Advisory will follow from 1 a.m. through 7 p.m. Friday, bringing gusty conditions that could impact travel and outdoor safety.

The extreme heat is especially dangerous for hikers and campers in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, where steep terrain and limited shade can intensify exposure. Emergency crews warn that dehydration and heat exhaustion can set in quickly, particularly during peak afternoon hours.

By early Friday, winds will increase across the canyon and surrounding Panhandle, with gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and create isolated power outages. Roads leading into the park and nearby highways may see difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Visitors are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and seek shaded or air-conditioned areas. Conditions improve after sunset, but gusty winds will persist through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible.
