Jackson, Mississippi – Wildfires could ignite and spread rapidly across Mississippi within hours Saturday as strong winds and very dry air create critical conditions statewide.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. Saturday for much of Mississippi, along with parts of eastern Louisiana and southeastern Arkansas. Northeast winds will range from 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, while humidity levels drop as low as 20 percent.

These conditions significantly increase the risk of fast-moving fires, especially across the Delta and central counties including Hinds, Rankin, Madison, and Warren. Areas along I-55, I-20, and U.S. 49 could see fires spread quickly through dry grass and wooded terrain, threatening homes, power infrastructure, and rural communities.

Cities such as Jackson, Greenville, Meridian, and Hattiesburg face heightened risk if any fires ignite. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning and use caution with equipment that could spark.

The elevated fire danger will last through Saturday evening, with additional alerts or Red Flag Warnings possible as conditions develop.
