Springfield, Illinois – Drivers across central Illinois have a narrowing window to prepare as fast-moving storms capable of 70 to 75 mph wind gusts and large hail push in before the evening commute, with impacts expected to intensify by 4 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, an enhanced level 3 severe risk stretches from Peoria through Springfield to Champaign and Danville, with the most dangerous conditions expected between 4 p.m. and midnight. Storms are moving east at roughly 50 mph, increasing the risk of rapid deterioration on major corridors like I-55, I-72, and I-74.
Communities including Bloomington, Decatur, and Jacksonville could see hail larger than golf balls, capable of damaging vehicles and rooftops within minutes. The tornado threat is more limited but peaks between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., especially in areas east of Springfield toward Champaign. Power outages are possible as wind gusts exceed 70 mph, particularly in open and rural areas.
Emergency managers urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. Charging devices and identifying a safe shelter location now could save critical minutes if warnings are issued.
Storm intensity is expected to weaken slightly after 10 p.m. as the system shifts into eastern Illinois, but strong winds and isolated severe cells may continue until midnight. Additional advisories remain possible through the evening.
