Lexington, KY – A Flood Watch is in effect from Friday morning through Saturday morning across portions of central and eastern Kentucky and southern Indiana as repeated rounds of heavy rain threaten to produce flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Louisville and Jackson, showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue developing throughout Friday and overnight into Saturday. Many areas have already received heavy rainfall earlier this week, leaving soils saturated and increasing runoff concerns.
The watch includes Lexington, Frankfort, Georgetown, Winchester, Paris, Cynthiana, Mount Sterling, Morehead, Bedford, and several surrounding communities along and north of the Interstate 64 corridor.
Forecasters expect widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches, with isolated locations potentially receiving up to 3 inches where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same areas. Excessive rainfall may quickly flood creeks, streams, low-water crossings, and poor drainage areas.
Counties included in the Flood Watch stretch across Fayette, Franklin, Scott, Bourbon, Nicholas, Clark, Harrison, Trimble, Henry, Bath, Fleming, Montgomery, Rowan, Elliott, and Jefferson County, Indiana.
Officials warn that flash flooding could develop rapidly during stronger thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, especially in flood-prone valleys and urban locations.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and monitor changing weather conditions closely. Additional Flash Flood Warnings may be issued later today if heavier storms develop.
Rain chances are expected to gradually diminish Saturday afternoon as the storm system moves eastward.
