Satsuma, FL – Multiple people were rescued Thursday, May 21, after a boat crash caused a pontoon boat to capsize on the St. Johns River near Satsuma, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the incident happened earlier Thursday near Marker 25 on the river. Deputies with the sheriff’s office Marine Unit and marine crews from Putnam County Fire Rescue responded after reports that several people from the pontoon boat were in the water.

According to the sheriff’s office, nearby boaters helped pull the individuals from the river before emergency crews arrived. Authorities said no injuries were reported following the incident.

Photos released by the sheriff’s office showed the overturned pontoon boat partially submerged while multiple vessels assisted at the scene.

The damaged boat was later towed to a nearby private dock as crews cleared the area.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are now investigating the crash. Authorities have not released details about what caused the pontoon boat to overturn or whether another vessel was involved.

The St. Johns River is a popular recreational boating destination in northeast Florida, especially during the warmer spring and summer months when river traffic increases ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

Officials continue encouraging boaters to wear life jackets and remain alert while navigating crowded waterways.

No additional information was immediately available Thursday afternoon.
