Pocatello, ID – Residents across eastern Idaho should prepare for freezing overnight temperatures and hazardous boating conditions as multiple weather advisories remain in effect through Friday morning, May 22.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Lake Wind Advisory for American Falls Reservoir continues until 9 p.m. MDT Thursday, May 21. North winds between 10 and 15 mph with gusts reaching 25 mph are expected across the Lower Snake River Plain, including Pocatello, American Falls, Blackfoot, Shelley, and Fort Hall. Forecasters said isolated thunderstorms could produce even stronger gusts later today.

Officials warned that rough water and strong winds may create dangerous conditions for small boats on American Falls Reservoir. Boaters are urged to use extra caution through the evening hours.

At the same time, a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. MDT Friday, May 22, for portions of eastern Idaho, including the Upper Snake River Plain and Arco/Mud Lake Desert regions. Cities impacted include Idaho Falls, Rexburg, St. Anthony, Mud Lake, and areas near Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Forecasters expect overnight lows between 32 and 36 degrees, with isolated rural locations briefly dropping near 30 degrees. Areas along Interstate 15 could remain slightly warmer.

The cold temperatures may damage or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered overnight. Residents are encouraged to protect plants by bringing them indoors or covering them before temperatures fall early Friday morning.

Weather officials said conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Friday as temperatures gradually warm.
