Shawnee, OK – A 3.5 magnitude earthquake was reported Tuesday morning just east of Oklahoma City near Shawnee, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake struck at approximately 1:47 a.m. CDT near Johnson, Oklahoma, about 2 kilometers east-southeast of the community and just south of Interstate 40. The earthquake occurred at a depth of roughly 17.5 kilometers.

According to the USGS, the tremor was classified as a light earthquake and was reviewed by the Oklahoma Geological Survey. Initial “Did You Feel It?” reports submitted to the agency showed residents across parts of central Oklahoma felt minor shaking, including areas near Shawnee and communities east of Oklahoma City.

No injuries or major damage were immediately reported Tuesday morning. Earthquakes of this magnitude can sometimes produce brief shaking indoors, rattling windows or dishes, but typically cause little to no structural damage.

Oklahoma remains one of the most seismically active states in the country due to both natural fault activity and past concerns tied to wastewater injection practices associated with oil and gas operations. State regulators and geological agencies continue to monitor seismic events across the region.

Drivers along Interstate 40 near Shawnee are not expected to experience travel impacts from the earthquake, though residents may continue to report aftershocks or additional shaking throughout the day.

Officials encourage anyone who felt the earthquake to submit reports through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” program to help scientists track the event’s intensity and reach.
