Chicago, IL – Warm and breezy weather is expected across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana Tuesday, with isolated strong to severe thunderstorms possible mainly south and east of the Chicago metro area before cooler temperatures settle in for the rest of the workweek.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, scattered showers and storms will move through portions of the region Tuesday morning before another round of isolated redevelopment becomes possible during the afternoon and evening hours. Forecasters said the greatest threat for stronger storms will be south and east of Interstate 55, including areas near Kankakee, Pontiac, northwest Indiana, and parts of central Illinois and Indiana.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of northwest Indiana and areas southeast of Chicago under a marginal to slight risk for severe weather Tuesday. While the overall severe threat has decreased compared to earlier forecasts, stronger storms may still produce gusty winds and small hail during the afternoon and early evening hours.

High temperatures Tuesday are expected to range from the lower 70s near Lake Michigan to the low 80s farther inland before cooler air arrives midweek. Rain chances are expected to taper off Tuesday evening.

Wednesday and Thursday will bring quieter conditions with partly cloudy skies and highs mainly in the 60s, though lakeshore communities could remain stuck in the 50s due to cooler northeast winds off Lake Michigan. Overnight lows may dip into the low-to-mid 40s inland Wednesday night.

Additional scattered showers could return Friday into Saturday, with temperatures gradually warming back into the upper 60s and mid-70s across much of the region.
