Blacksburg, Va. – A cold front moving through Friday is expected to bring rainfall across southwest Virginia, with the highest totals in western mountain areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, rain is likely throughout the region Friday, with Western Greenbrier and the Alleghany Highlands expected to receive the greatest amounts, ranging from 0.50 to 0.75 inches. Other areas across southwest and central Virginia are forecast to see lighter totals generally between 0.10 and 0.35 inches.

The agency said the risk of flooding and severe weather remains very low at this time, reducing the likelihood of significant disruptions despite the incoming system.

By Friday night into Saturday, the same cold front will usher in colder air and gusty winds. Wind gusts between 15 and 30 mph are expected along and west of the Blue Ridge, with stronger gusts possible at higher elevations.

Saturday morning will feel notably colder, with wind chill values dropping into the upper teens to lower 30s across the region. These conditions could impact early morning travel and outdoor plans, especially in elevated areas.

While widespread hazards are not expected, residents should prepare for a wet Friday followed by a sharp drop in temperatures heading into the weekend.

The shift may be particularly noticeable for students, commuters, and early-shift workers heading out Saturday morning in colder, windy conditions.
