Eureka, California – Residents along the Humboldt County coast face dangerously cold wind chills early Thursday, with temperatures feeling as low as 25 degrees and increasing the risk of frostbite before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for southwestern Humboldt until 9 a.m. Thursday. Wind chills dipping into the mid-20s are expected during the overnight and early morning hours, especially in exposed coastal and rural areas.
Communities including Eureka, King Salmon, and Fields Landing may experience the coldest conditions, particularly in areas exposed to coastal winds. Those without adequate shelter or heating face the highest risk, as prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to hypothermia. Outdoor workers and early morning commuters should take precautions before heading out.
Residents are urged to wear layered clothing, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors during peak cold conditions. Pets should be brought indoors, and vulnerable populations should be checked on.
Conditions will gradually improve after sunrise as temperatures rise, but cold conditions may linger through the early morning hours. Additional advisories could be issued if temperatures drop again overnight.
