Buffalo, New York – Drivers across the Southern Tier could encounter water-covered roads and sudden visibility drops by late Thursday afternoon as thunderstorms develop south of Lake Ontario.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, showers will expand across western New York Thursday, with thunderstorms most likely between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., especially south of Buffalo. Rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1 inch are expected, but localized areas could see higher amounts where storms repeatedly track over the same locations.
The greatest concern centers on the Southern Tier, including Jamestown, Olean, and Wellsville, where isolated flash flooding may develop. Portions of I-86 and Route 219 could see ponding water and hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute. Areas east of Lake Ontario, including Watertown, are expected to see lighter rainfall totals.
While severe weather is not expected to be widespread, a few stronger storms could still produce gusty winds and brief downpours capable of overwhelming drainage systems.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways, allow extra travel time, and monitor alerts through Thursday night. Rain and storm activity will taper off overnight, but additional advisories may be issued if heavier bands develop.
