Pueblo, CO – Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected to intensify across southern Colorado this afternoon, as strong winds and record-setting heat combine to create a high risk for rapidly spreading wildfires.

According to the US National Weather Service in Pueblo, critical fire weather conditions will develop Thursday afternoon, with wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph and relative humidity dropping into the single digits across south-central and southeast Colorado.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., covering areas including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and surrounding communities. Officials warn that any fires that start could spread quickly and become difficult to control under these conditions.

In addition to the fire risks, temperatures are expected to reach record levels once again. Forecast highs include near 89 degrees in Pueblo, low 80s in Colorado Springs, and upper 70s in Alamosa — potentially breaking daily records.

Relief is on the way, however, as a cold front is expected to move through later this afternoon into the evening. The front will bring shifting winds out of the north and cooler temperatures heading into Friday.

Residents are strongly urged to avoid outdoor burning and use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire.
