Grand Forks, ND – A burst of freezing rain early Thursday morning is creating վտանգous travel conditions across eastern North Dakota, especially along the busy I-94 and Highway 200 corridors.
According to the US National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a band of precipitation is moving through the region early Thursday, bringing a period of freezing rain as temperatures continue to fall due to north winds. The system is expected to impact the morning commute, particularly in areas including Fargo, Valley City, and surrounding communities.
Forecasters warn that while some main roads may remain just wet, untreated surfaces — including side streets, sidewalks, and driveways — could quickly become icy. The greatest concern is for patchy black ice, which can be difficult for drivers to see and react to in time.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 7 a.m., with conditions expected to gradually improve later in the morning as precipitation tapers off.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions. Even brief periods of freezing rain can create hazardous travel in a short amount of time.
Residents across Cass County, Grand Forks County, and the broader Red River Valley should use caution when heading out early Thursday.
