Pittsburgh, PA – A widespread freeze warning is in effect overnight May 11–12 across much of Pennsylvania and parts of northern West Virginia, with some areas expected to see temperatures plunge as low as 25 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Pittsburgh and State College, the warning runs from midnight through 8 a.m. Tuesday and impacts a broad stretch of the state, including cities such as Pittsburgh, Butler, Indiana, Johnstown, DuBois, and State College, along with areas of Tucker County in West Virginia.

The warning covers western, central, and northern Pennsylvania, including counties like Mercer, Butler, Clarion, Cambria, Centre, and Potter. Colder inland and higher elevation areas are expected to experience the most severe conditions before sunrise.

Forecasters warn of widespread frost and hard freeze conditions overnight, making this one of the most significant cold events of the spring season so far.

The primary concern is severe damage to agriculture and vegetation. Sensitive plants and crops could be killed, and unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk due to prolonged sub-freezing temperatures.

Residents are urged to take immediate action by covering or bringing plants indoors and protecting exposed pipes. The duration and intensity of this freeze increase the risk of widespread damage.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing after sunrise Tuesday, ending the freeze threat by mid-morning.
