Burlington, VT – A freeze warning is in effect overnight May 11–12 across parts of northern New York and much of Vermont, with temperatures expected to fall between 29 and 32 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the warning runs from midnight through 9 a.m. Tuesday and includes areas such as Massena, Ogdensburg, Malone, Montpelier, Rutland, and White River Junction.

The warning covers the St. Lawrence Valley in northern New York and a broad portion of Vermont outside the Champlain Valley and Northeast Kingdom. Higher elevations are expected to see the coldest temperatures, while areas near the St. Lawrence and Connecticut Rivers may remain slightly warmer.

Forecasters warn that widespread frost and freeze conditions will develop overnight, especially in rural and elevated areas before sunrise.

The primary concern is significant damage to agriculture and vegetation. Sensitive plants and crops could be killed, and unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk due to sub-freezing temperatures.

Residents are urged to take immediate precautions by covering or bringing plants indoors and protecting exposed pipes. This is a more severe cold event than a typical frost advisory due to the sustained freezing temperatures.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing after 9 a.m. Tuesday, ending the freeze threat by mid-morning.
