Fargo, North Dakota – Roads across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota could turn slick within minutes as light freezing rain continues through the early Thursday morning commute, creating uneven conditions on major routes like I-94 and I-29.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. CDT, with ice accumulations staying under one tenth of an inch. That thin glaze is enough to create patchy ice on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads across Cass, Traill, and Barnes counties in North Dakota, and Clay, Norman, and Mahnomen counties in Minnesota.

In Fargo and Moorhead, drivers may encounter stretches of wet pavement followed suddenly by icy patches, especially near exit ramps and intersections. Valley City, Hillsboro, and Mayville are also seeing fluctuating surface conditions as temperatures hover near freezing.

Officials urge drivers to slow down and avoid sudden braking during the morning commute. Checking 511 road reports before heading out can help identify the most hazardous stretches.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise as temperatures rise, but additional advisories could be issued if icing persists beyond mid-morning.
