South Bend, IN – Drivers in St. Joseph County should prepare for changing traffic patterns starting Monday, May 18, as a major road project begins along State Road 933.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the project will take place on SR 933 (Lincolnway) from State Road 331 to Ash Road, impacting key travel routes through Mishawaka and Osceola in the South Bend metro area.

During the first phase, crews will focus on storm drainage improvements between Chestnut Street and Ash Road. While traffic will remain open in both directions, lanes will be narrowed and shifted to the south side of the roadway, which could slow commutes.

Officials say drivers should expect periodic changes in traffic patterns, including the use of flaggers when necessary. Motorists are urged to use caution, especially during peak travel times.

According to INDOT, additional phases will include road patching, full resurfacing, and curb ramp upgrades along the corridor. A new traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of SR 933 and Apple Road, designed to coordinate with a nearby railroad crossing.

Construction is expected to continue through late July for initial phases, with overall project work extending through the end of November.

Pedestrian access may be temporarily impacted, though officials say alternate routes or facilities will be provided when needed.

Drivers traveling through Mishawaka, Osceola, and surrounding areas are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time throughout the duration of the project.
