Whites City, New Mexico – A light earthquake struck just south-southwest of Whites City at 8:14 p.m. Wednesday, delivering a brief jolt that residents may have felt across parts of Eddy County.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 3.1 quake originated about 5.9 kilometers below the surface, roughly 59 kilometers south-southwest of Whites City near the Texas border. The event was reviewed by seismologists shortly after detection, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Shaking at this level is typically weak but can be noticeable indoors, especially in quiet areas like Whites City, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and along U.S. Route 62/180. Residents in Carlsbad and nearby oilfield operations may have felt a quick vibration or heard a low rumble.
Local emergency management officials have not issued alerts, but small quakes can still prompt safety reminders. Residents should secure loose items, check for minor structural cracks, and review earthquake safety plans, particularly in areas with ongoing drilling activity.
While no aftershocks have been confirmed, additional minor seismic activity remains possible through the overnight hours. USGS continues monitoring the region, and updates will be issued if conditions change.
