Ukiah, California – Temperatures dropping to near-freezing levels overnight could damage or kill sensitive plants across Mendocino and Lake counties before sunrise Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Frost Advisory takes effect at 2 a.m. Thursday and continues until 9 a.m., with lows expected to dip to 33°F across inland valleys including Willits, Covelo, and Lakeport. Calm winds and clear skies will allow temperatures to fall rapidly, creating ideal conditions for frost formation.

Agricultural zones in Potter Valley and Boonville face increased risk, especially for early-season crops and vineyards beginning spring growth. In rural communities like Laytonville and Philo, exposed gardens and outdoor vegetation could see damage within hours if left unprotected.

Residents are urged to cover tender plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and avoid overnight irrigation that could worsen freeze damage. Farmers should monitor low-lying fields where colder air tends to settle.

Temperatures will rebound quickly after 9 a.m. Thursday as sunshine returns, but additional cold mornings remain possible through the end of the week if clear overnight conditions persist.
