Indianapolis, Indiana – Severe thunderstorms are expected Thursday across Illinois and Indiana, bringing risks of hail, wind damage, and possible tornadoes.

According to a post from the U.S. National Weather Service, storms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes are likely to develop across parts of the lower Midwest on Thursday, March 26. The Storm Prediction Center highlights central and eastern Illinois into much of Indiana within a slight to enhanced risk area (levels 2–3 of 5).

Forecasters indicate storms may intensify through the afternoon and evening as they track eastward, with the greatest concern focused along and near major population centers including Springfield, Champaign, and Indianapolis.

While not all areas will see severe conditions, any storms that develop could become hazardous quickly. Damaging straight-line winds and large hail are the primary threats, with isolated tornadoes also possible.

Travel impacts are likely along key corridors including Interstates 55, 65, and 70, especially during the evening commute. Sudden downpours and strong wind gusts may reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings throughout the day Thursday.
