Kankakee, IL – A Tuesday afternoon shooting in Kankakee left one man dead and another injured, with a suspect now in custody following a police response to a reported robbery.

According to the Kankakee Police Department, officers were dispatched around 1:52 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 500 block of South Fifth Avenue in Kankakee, located in Kankakee County within the greater Chicago metro region. The call involved a reported robbery and a gunshot victim.

When officers arrived, they located a suspect at the scene along with two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said the suspect was detained without incident.

Both victims were transported to local hospitals by the Kankakee Fire Department. A 38-year-old male victim was later pronounced deceased. Authorities said the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The second victim sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

Detectives processed the scene and recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the incident.

Police identified the suspect as Malik A. Jones, 27, of Kankakee. According to authorities, Jones allegedly was taken into custody, questioned, and later transported to the Jerome Combs Detention Center, where he was charged with homicide and aggravated battery with a firearm.
