Mokena, IL – A developing investigation is underway in Will County after what authorities say is a suspected human skull discovered in a field near a busy Mokena roadway.

According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Oakwood Drive and Townline Road for reports of possible human remains. Officials said land surveyors working in the field allegedly located what appeared to be a human skull, prompting an immediate law enforcement response.

Authorities reported that deputies allegedly conducted an initial search of the property and discovered additional bones scattered throughout the field. The remains that were recovered have been turned over to the Will County Coroner’s Office for further examination and identification, officials said.

A comprehensive search of the area was scheduled for around 9 a.m. Wednesday, with multiple agencies, including crime scene investigators and Will County EMA Search and Rescue, assisting in the ongoing effort. Residents and drivers in the area were urged to use caution due to increased emergency personnel and vehicles.

Investigators have not yet confirmed the identity of the remains or how long they may have been at the location. Officials said the case remains an active investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
