Arlington Heights, IL – Police are investigating after a firearm belonging to a school resource officer was reported missing inside an Arlington Heights school, prompting a large-scale search and class cancellations.
According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the incident occurred Monday, May 4, 2026, at Forest View Educational Center. Officials say the officer removed the weapon while using a restroom shortly before school dismissal and later realized it was missing.
Surveillance footage showed only a limited number of individuals entered the restroom during that timeframe. Authorities immediately launched a search of the building and surrounding grounds, utilizing K9 units from multiple agencies trained in firearm detection.
Despite the extensive search, the firearm was not located.
Out of an abundance of caution, school officials canceled classes for Tuesday, May 5, while the investigation continues. Additional police presence has been assigned to the campus.
Detectives are actively working to determine the location of the missing weapon and identify any individuals involved. Police say they are dedicating all available resources to recover the firearm and ensure the safety of students and staff.
Officials acknowledged community concerns and described the situation as serious, noting a full internal review will also be conducted.
