Murfreesboro, TN – Two loaded handguns were recovered from vehicles connected to high school prom events in Rutherford County this week, prompting charges against two teens and raising safety concerns during peak prom season.
According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, school resource officers (SROs) located the firearms during separate incidents tied to proms held in Murfreesboro and at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). Authorities said both weapons were discovered in vehicles transporting students and dates.
In one case, officials said a La Vergne High School student allegedly brought a handgun to a prom event Saturday at The Fountains in Murfreesboro. The weapon was found inside a vehicle driven by an adult also attending the event. The student, identified as 19-year-old Trevor Carter, was charged with possession of a weapon at a school function and later released on bond, according to SRO supervisors.
In a separate incident on April 25 at MTSU, a Nashville teen attending the Stewarts Creek High School prom was allegedly found with a firearm and a small amount of marijuana. Authorities said 18-year-old Deangelo Davis was charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds and simple possession. He was also released on bond pending a court hearing.
Officials said one of the recovered firearms was a Glock 9mm with a round in the chamber and an extended magazine. Another weapon, described as an AR-style pistol, was also located during the investigations.
Both cases remain under review, and hearings are scheduled in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.
