Illinois–Iowa – Bright skies and warming air are quickly taking over this morning, but storm clouds are already lining up to bring lightning, hail, and travel slowdowns by Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, calm and dry conditions hold today with highs near 74°F. Winds stay light early, but a stronger system approaches, increasing storm chances after 1 p.m. Thursday. Rain and thunderstorms become more widespread into the evening.
Davenport, Moline, and Rock Island will see temperatures climb near 79°F Thursday before storms develop. Some storms could produce small hail and frequent lightning, especially along and north of I-80. A stronger line of storms may form later in the evening as a cold front pushes through.
Drivers should prepare for changing conditions. Roads like I-80, I-74, and US-61 could become slick during heavier showers. Visibility may drop quickly in downpours. Plan extra time and avoid sudden stops during the afternoon and evening commute.
Storms taper off later Thursday night, but colder air moves in fast. Temperatures drop into the mid-30s, setting up a chilly start Friday. While widespread icing is not expected, bridges and overpasses could turn slick if moisture lingers.
Sunshine returns Friday with highs near 50°F, followed by a pleasant but cool Saturday. A steady warm-up arrives Sunday, pushing temperatures back into the 60s and signaling a more consistent spring pattern ahead.
