Springfield, Missouri — Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across southern Missouri Sunday afternoon, with storms intensifying between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and bringing damaging wind gusts and hail risks to Springfield, Joplin, Rolla, West Plains and Branson.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storm chances will continue into Monday afternoon and evening, with some storms capable of becoming strong to severe as instability increases across the region.
This is part of a broader system bringing repeated rounds of storm development across the Ozarks, increasing the risk of cumulative impacts over two days.
Stronger storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power outages, while hail up to quarter size could damage vehicles and roofs. Brief heavy rain may also lead to rapid water pooling on low-lying roads and underpasses, especially along I-44 and US-65 where visibility could drop quickly during peak travel hours.
Drivers should avoid travel during severe storms and never drive through water-covered roads, while residents should secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.
The most dangerous conditions are expected between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, when storms are most likely to intensify and impact evening travel.
