New Bern, NC – Temperatures will drop to near freezing overnight, creating a patchy frost risk across eastern North Carolina before a rapid warmup pushes highs into the mid-80s by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, inland areas will see lows around 37 degrees late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, with clear skies early allowing frost to develop before clouds increase. Sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation could be impacted during the early morning hours.

Conditions shift quickly after sunrise Wednesday, with highs climbing to around 69 degrees before surging to 78 degrees Thursday and peaking near 86 degrees Friday. This sharp warmup spans communities from New Bern and Greenville to Jacksonville and the Outer Banks.

A cold front is expected to move through Friday evening, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms that could affect the evening commute along U.S. 70 and U.S. 17 corridors. Behind the front, cooler air returns for the weekend with noticeably lower temperatures.

Residents should protect plants overnight and prepare for changing conditions by Friday evening. Additional updates may be issued as the timing of showers and storms becomes clearer.
