South Bend, Indiana — Another round of near-freezing temperatures will settle across northern Indiana overnight, with frost forming early Sunday and threatening vegetation while creating localized slick travel conditions between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, temperatures will fall into the 32 to 38 degree range late Saturday night, with the coldest window expected from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Clear skies and light winds will allow rapid cooling, increasing frost coverage across the region.

Cities including South Bend, Fort Wayne, Elkhart, Warsaw and Michigan City face the highest risk, especially in low-lying rural areas, open fields and neighborhoods away from urban heat. Bridges and overpasses along I-80/90 and U.S. 30 may develop thin frost, leading to isolated slick spots for early morning drivers. Frost can form quickly on untreated surfaces, particularly in shaded areas and rural corridors.

This is part of a broader system of cool, dry air across the Great Lakes, allowing temperatures to drop efficiently overnight before a warming trend begins Sunday afternoon.

Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants, avoid overnight watering and use caution on early drives where frost may form on elevated roadways.

The greatest risk for plant damage and slick travel will occur between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday, when temperatures reach their lowest and frost coverage peaks.
