Los Angeles, Calif. – Coastal communities across southern California could have as little as 10 to 15 minutes to reach safety after a strong earthquake triggers a tsunami threat.
According to guidance from the National Weather Service and tsunami preparedness officials, hazard zones stretch across low-lying coastal areas from Ventura and Los Angeles counties through Orange County and into San Diego. Areas at highest risk include beaches, harbors, marinas, and neighborhoods near sea level in cities like Santa Monica, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Oceanside.
Officials stress that strong ground shaking is the natural warning. Residents and visitors in tsunami zones should move inland or to higher ground immediately without waiting for alerts. Tsunami waves can arrive quickly and continue for hours, increasing danger along the coastline.
Key routes such as Pacific Coast Highway and local coastal roads may become congested during an evacuation, making early action critical. Residents are urged to review hazard maps, identify evacuation routes, and sign up for emergency alerts ahead of time.
Preparedness steps include planning multiple escape routes, keeping emergency supplies ready, and ensuring pets can be evacuated quickly. Additional public safety messaging and drills may continue as agencies work to keep coastal communities prepared.
