Duluth, MN – Slick roads could develop before the morning commute Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures hover near freezing and light snow or ice moves across northern Minnesota.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, temperatures will slide from near 50°F Wednesday afternoon to just 34°F Thursday, with the coldest stretch arriving Friday. A light wintry mix is expected during the early morning hours both days, with precipitation chances peaking between 6 a.m. and noon Thursday, reaching 30% to 45% in parts of the Arrowhead and along the North Shore.
Communities including Duluth, Ely, International Falls, and Grand Marais may see brief periods of light snow or a glaze of ice, especially on untreated roads and elevated surfaces. While accumulation is expected to remain minimal, even a thin layer of ice could impact Highway 61 along the North Shore and inland routes near the Canadian border.
Drivers should allow extra time during the morning commute, especially before 9 a.m., and watch for patchy slick spots on bridges and overpasses. Keep headlights on in reduced visibility and maintain safe following distance.
Conditions turn colder Friday with highs dipping into the low-to-mid 30s before a gradual warm-up begins over the weekend. Additional updates may be issued if ice risks increase.
