Easton, Wash. – Rising water levels on the Yakima River could flood low-lying roads and nearby properties by Wednesday morning as rain pushes the river above flood stage.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Flood Watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning for the eastern slopes of the Washington Cascades, including Easton, Cle Elum, and Roslyn. The Yakima River at Easton is already at 51.14 feet and is expected to reach flood stage of 51.3 feet by Wednesday morning, cresting near 51.36 feet Wednesday afternoon before gradually falling late Wednesday night.
Areas near Elk Meadows and low-water crossings along the river face the greatest risk, with runoff from rainfall along the Cascade crest feeding into already elevated river levels. Roads near the riverbanks could become submerged, and fast-moving water may impact smaller creeks and streams feeding the Yakima.
Residents in flood-prone areas should prepare to move to higher ground if conditions worsen, avoid driving across flooded roadways, and keep a close watch on river updates. Outdoor equipment and vehicles near the river should be relocated ahead of rising water.
Water levels are expected to recede late Wednesday night, but additional advisories or warnings could be issued if rainfall intensifies or runoff increases.
