North Platte, Neb. – Fires could spread uncontrollably within minutes starting late Wednesday morning as near-record heat, strong winds, and extremely dry air grip western Nebraska and extend into eastern Colorado.

According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Red Flag Warning begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday and continues through 11 a.m. Thursday across the Sandhills, Nebraska National Forest, and the western Panhandle. Temperatures will surge into the upper 80s to low 90s while humidity drops as low as 12 percent, creating highly combustible conditions.

Areas along Highway 83, Highway 20, and rural stretches near Valentine, North Platte, and Ogallala face elevated risk, especially Wednesday afternoon when west winds gust up to 40 mph. By early Thursday morning, a sharp wind shift to the north could push flames in new directions with gusts reaching 45 mph.

Across the Colorado Rockies and adjacent plains, including the San Luis Valley and areas near Craig and Meeker, humidity could fall as low as 7 percent with similar gusty winds, further expanding the fire threat. Isolated dry lightning Wednesday evening adds another ignition risk without meaningful rainfall.

Avoid all outdoor burning, secure equipment that may spark, and be ready to act quickly if fire develops. Dangerous conditions will persist into Thursday morning, with additional warnings possible if dry patterns hold.
