Washington, D.C. – Dry, calm conditions will keep travel smooth across the Mid-Atlantic today, but a late-week storm system is already lining up to bring rain and thunderstorms back into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, high pressure will dominate through Wednesday, delivering sunshine and highs in the upper 40s to low 50s across Washington, Baltimore, and surrounding areas. Light winds and clear skies will support quiet conditions along major routes including I-95, I-495, and I-66.
Clouds will begin increasing Thursday afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front, with the first showers developing late Thursday night. Storms are expected to move from north to south overnight into early Friday, with the highest risk for stronger storms focused in western areas including Garrett County, Maryland, and nearby parts of West Virginia.
While most of the region will see rain and embedded thunderstorms, isolated stronger cells could produce gusty winds late Thursday night. The timing suggests potential impacts to the early Friday morning commute, especially along I-70 and I-81 corridors.
Residents should take advantage of the quiet weather through midweek and prepare for changing conditions late Thursday night. Additional advisories may be issued as the cold front approaches.
