Gaylord, Michigan – Snow is reducing visibility across northern Michigan early this morning, with slick roads developing during the morning commute, especially in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a quick-moving band of snow is crossing the region, producing less than 2 inches of accumulation but enough to create hazardous travel for several hours. Visibility may drop below one mile at times, particularly along M-28 and I-75 in the eastern U.P. and far northern Lower Michigan.

Communities including Sault Ste. Marie, Petoskey, and Gaylord will see the greatest impacts through mid-morning, while areas south of M-32, including Traverse City, are expected to see little to no accumulation. Road crews may focus on bridges and overpasses where light snow can quickly stick.

Conditions improve later today as temperatures climb into the mid-30s to mid-40s, with a warming trend continuing into Wednesday and Thursday. Rain chances increase by Thursday, especially across northern Lower Michigan, before a sharp return to colder air arrives Friday with highs dropping into the 20s and 30s.

Drivers should slow down during the morning commute, allow extra stopping distance, and watch for brief visibility drops. Additional updates may follow as colder air returns heading into the end of the week.
