Albuquerque, New Mexico – New Mexico ranks among the higher states for UFO sightings per capita, with one report for every 1,169 residents, reflecting long-standing patterns of unexplained aerial activity.

According to Casino.ca’s annual UFO sightings analysis, New Mexico places within the upper tier nationwide based on data collected since 1974. The rankings compare total sightings against population, identifying where reports are most concentrated.

The state holds a unique place in UFO history, with one of the most widely known incidents occurring in 1947 near Roswell, where debris recovered from a crash site sparked decades of speculation and investigation. While officials later attributed the material to a military balloon project, the case remains central to UFO discussions.

In another case, multiple witnesses near Socorro in 1964 reported a close encounter with an egg-shaped craft and uniformed figures—an incident that was investigated by federal authorities and remains unexplained.

More recent reports included in national databases describe bright lights, hovering objects, and sudden high-speed maneuvers across regions including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and southern desert areas. None of the sightings have been confirmed as extraterrestrial.

Researchers point to New Mexico’s expansive desert landscapes, low light pollution, and proximity to military testing areas as factors contributing to its consistent reporting rate.

Nationwide, the average chance of reporting a UFO sighting is estimated at about 1 in 1,700, placing New Mexico above average.

Sightings are most frequently reported during nighttime hours, particularly by residents, travelers, and night-shift workers observing clear desert skies.

New Mexico’s ranking reinforces its position as one of the most historically significant and consistently active UFO reporting states in the country, according to the latest annual data.
