Lincoln, NE — Widespread frost is expected across Nebraska and western Iowa overnight, with temperatures falling to 29–36°F between midnight and 9 a.m. Friday, threatening sensitive plants and creating patchy slick spots for early-morning travel in Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island and Norfolk.
According to the National Weather Service, the coldest conditions will occur from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. Friday across eastern and central Nebraska, including cities such as Fremont, Columbus and Beatrice. Light winds and clearing skies will allow rapid heat loss, supporting widespread frost formation, especially in rural and low-lying areas.
Sensitive vegetation may be damaged or killed within hours, particularly in agricultural zones surrounding Lincoln and Norfolk. Outdoor irrigation lines and exposed hoses could also be impacted. Patchy frost may form on bridges, overpasses and untreated stretches of I-80 and Highway 77, creating slick conditions for the early commute.
Low-lying neighborhoods, drainage areas and sheltered fields near the Platte River valley are most vulnerable, where cold air pools quickly before sunrise.
This is part of a broader system bringing unseasonably cold air across the central Plains.
Residents should cover plants and avoid early travel on untreated roads where frost may develop.
The highest frost risk will occur between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., when temperatures reach their lowest and icy patches can develop on exposed surfaces.
