Chicago, IL – A New Jersey man is facing serious felony charges following an alleged road rage incident that escalated into violence along Interstate 57 in Chicago late Monday.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident began on April 28, 2026, Tuesday, when troopers received reports of multiple crashes on I-57 northbound starting near 127th Street in Cook County. Authorities say 25-year-old Hassan A. Moutassim of Jersey City allegedly drove a semi-truck recklessly, causing a damages of eight crashes before stopping near Halsted Street.
Police allege Moutassim exited the vehicle after the final crash and physically attacked another driver involved in one of the collisions. The victim was reportedly battered and an attempt was made to strangle them before officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody. The injured driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to officials, Illinois State Police Troop 3, along with Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 agents, presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on April 29, 2026, Wednesday. Moutassim has been charged with Attempted Murder, a Class X felony, along with Aggravated Battery on a Public Way and Aggravated Battery involving strangulation, both Class 3 felonies.
The suspect remains in custody pending his first court appearance. Authorities emphasized that the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
State police are reminding drivers to avoid engaging in road rage situations and to contact authorities if they feel threatened on the road.
