Charlotte, North Carolina — Showers and thunderstorms will intensify across the Charlotte area Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and travel disruptions during the evening commute from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. across Charlotte, Gastonia, Concord, Rock Hill, and Huntersville.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will develop after 4 p.m. with peak intensity between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Rainfall totals may reach 0.25 to 0.50 inches, with locally higher amounts and wind gusts up to 25 mph in stronger storms.

Heavy downpours will quickly create slick roads and standing water along I-77, I-85, and Independence Boulevard. Low-lying underpasses near uptown Charlotte and flood-prone intersections in Gastonia and Rock Hill may see rapid water buildup, while brief gusts can knock down small branches and reduce visibility within minutes.

This is part of a broader system across the Carolinas, where warm, moisture-rich air and daytime heating are fueling scattered thunderstorms.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and expect delays during the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. peak window. Secure loose outdoor items ahead of gusty winds and monitor alerts for rapidly changing conditions.

Storms may continue overnight from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., bringing additional rain and travel disruptions before tapering early Thursday morning.
