South Carolina’s Upstate is warming quickly under bright sun, but the air feels unusually dry, and wind is beginning to pick up across Spartanburg and surrounding communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, an increased fire danger is in effect through the afternoon and early evening. Relative humidity is dropping below 30 percent while wind gusts reach 25 to 30 mph, creating ideal conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly.
Vegetation across the region has dried out in recent days, and that’s the key concern. Along I-85, I-26, and rural roads across Spartanburg and Greenville counties, even a small spark could lead to fast-moving flames. Outdoor burning should be avoided, and any ignition sources must be handled with extreme care.
Winds will continue through the afternoon, pulling more moisture out of grasses and leaf litter. While temperatures climb to around 80 degrees, the dry air will dominate the feel of the day. Secure loose items and avoid activities that could create sparks.
Conditions calm later tonight as winds ease and temperatures fall into the low 40s. That cooler air brings some relief, but the dry pattern remains in place.
Looking ahead, the week turns quieter and more spring-like. Sunshine continues Tuesday with highs near 60 degrees, followed by mid-60s Wednesday with only a slight chance of a passing shower. Warmer air builds again by Thursday and Friday, pushing highs back into the upper 70s and mid-80s.
This is a classic spring fire setup: warm, dry, and breezy. Stay alert through peak heating hours this afternoon. Are you noticing drier air or gusty winds where you are today?
