Hastings, Nebraska – A dangerous window for fast-moving grass fires is setting up this afternoon across south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas, where wind and dry air will combine to rapidly spread any ignition between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning is in effect during that timeframe for counties including Dawson, Gosper, Phelps, Furnas and Harlan in Nebraska, along with Phillips and Rooks counties in Kansas. South-southeast winds will strengthen to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph as humidity drops as low as 18 to 22 percent.

The highest risk will develop in open fields and along roadways such as U.S. Highway 183 and Highway 6, where dry grasses can ignite and spread quickly under sustained winds. Even small sparks from equipment, vehicles or discarded cigarettes could lead to rapidly expanding fires.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, delay use of machinery that could create sparks and secure trailer chains to prevent roadside ignition.

Conditions will begin to improve after 9 p.m. as winds weaken and humidity recovers, but additional fire weather alerts may follow if dry conditions persist into Tuesday.
