Hastings, Nebraska – Strong winds and dry air are creating dangerous fire conditions across central Nebraska this afternoon, with any spark capable of spreading quickly between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for western portions of the region as southeast winds gust between 25 and 30 mph and relative humidity drops to critical levels. High temperatures will range from 52°F to 60°F today, but the combination of wind and dry fuels sharply increases wildfire risk.

Communities including Hastings, Kearney, and Grand Island could see rapidly changing fire behavior, especially in open fields and along rural roadways. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should secure equipment that could produce sparks.

Conditions improve Tuesday as winds ease and temperatures rise into the 70s, followed by a significant warmup Wednesday with highs reaching 85°F to 92°F across the region.

Another system arrives Thursday bringing a chance for rain and shifting winds, which may briefly reduce fire danger. However, a sharp cooldown follows, with highs falling back into the low to mid-50s by Friday.

Additional warnings may be issued if fire conditions intensify or expand beyond current areas.
