Caribou, Maine – Drivers across northern Maine could encounter slick roads within the next few hours as light snow develops across the highlands, with minor accumulation possible before midday Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a weak weather system will bring patchy snow mainly to Aroostook County and higher elevations, with totals staying at or below 1 inch. Roads are expected to remain mostly wet, but early morning travel could turn slippery in spots, especially along Route 1 and secondary rural roads.
Temperatures will trend colder through tonight, setting the stage for a more active pattern later this week. By Thursday morning, another system may bring light snow inland while coastal areas, including Bar Harbor and Machias, see mainly rain. Conditions will shift Thursday night, with snow mixing with rain across central and northern areas, while Downeast transitions to steady rain.
Cities including Presque Isle, Caribou, and Houlton may see brief periods of mixed precipitation, which could impact the Thursday morning commute with reduced visibility and slick stretches.
Colder air returns by Friday into Saturday, dropping temperatures about 10 degrees below normal and reinforcing a late-week chill across the region.
More updates are expected as the Thursday system’s track becomes clearer and precipitation types are refined.
