Duluth, Minnesota – Heavy rain arriving Monday afternoon could quickly lead to water-covered roads and rising creeks across the Northland, with the heaviest impacts expected before sunrise Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected from Monday through early Tuesday, with locally higher amounts possible along the North Shore and into northwest Wisconsin. The most persistent rainfall is likely between 1 p.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Communities including Duluth, Superior, Grand Rapids, Hinckley, and Ashland could see 1.5 to 2 inches of rain, while areas like International Falls and Hibbing may receive closer to 1 to 1.5 inches. Roads such as I-35, U.S. Highway 53, and Highway 2 may experience ponding, especially in low-lying or poor drainage areas.

Minor flooding is possible in creeks and streams, particularly in the Arrowhead region and northwest Wisconsin. Urban areas may also see localized flooding where storm drains become overwhelmed.

Drivers should slow down on wet roads and avoid water-covered streets. Residents are urged to clear drains, charge devices, and monitor alerts overnight as conditions worsen.

Rain will taper early Tuesday morning, but additional updates are expected as rainfall totals and flooding potential become clearer.
