Cincinnati, Ohio – Temperatures surged to 86 degrees by early afternoon Thursday, breaking a record that stood for more than a century and pushing energy demand sharply higher across southwest Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the new high surpassed the previous record of 85 degrees set in 1907, with officials confirming the milestone shortly after midday and planning a final verification report by late evening. The rapid climb in temperatures occurred under clear skies and strong March sun, accelerating warming during peak daytime hours.

The heat is being felt across Hamilton County and surrounding areas, with pavement temperatures climbing even higher and increasing risks for overheating in vehicles and homes without cooling. Utility providers are monitoring elevated electricity usage as residents turn to air conditioning earlier than typical for this time of year.

City officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat between noon and 4 p.m., and check on vulnerable neighbors. Fire crews also warn that dry conditions combined with heat could elevate brush fire risk in grassy areas.

Temperatures are expected to ease slightly by late evening, but additional updates from the National Weather Service are expected as the region tracks more unseasonable warmth into the weekend.
