Burlington, VT – Roads across Vermont could turn slick within hours as light freezing drizzle develops overnight, creating icy patches just in time for the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, pockets of freezing drizzle will form late Sunday evening and persist through early Monday, producing a light glaze of up to 0.05 inches. While not widespread, the ice will be scattered across much of Vermont and the Adirondacks, making conditions unpredictable for drivers between midnight and 9 a.m. Monday.

The Champlain Valley, including Burlington, Montpelier, and St. Albans, faces the highest risk for slick secondary roads and untreated surfaces. Bridges and overpasses along I-89 and Route 7 may freeze first, increasing the chance of early-morning spinouts. In northern New York, areas around Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake could see similar spotty icing.

Transportation officials urge drivers to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel before sunrise. Sidewalks and parking lots may also become hazardous, especially in shaded areas.

No widespread power outages are expected due to the light accumulation, but even minor icing can disrupt travel.

The freezing drizzle threat tapers off by late Monday morning, though additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
