Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Explosive supercell storms are expected to develop across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia this evening, with hail up to 2 inches in diameter posing a significant threat to vehicles and property within hours.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a level 3 of 5 severe risk remains in place through Sunday night, with discrete supercells likely to form ahead of a stronger line between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. These storms will be capable of producing very large hail, with some stones reaching tennis ball size.

The highest risk stretches from eastern Ohio through western Pennsylvania into northern West Virginia, including Columbus, Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and Morgantown. In addition to hail up to 2 inches, wind gusts between 55 and 70 mph could down trees and power lines. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out in any sustained rotating storm.

Residents should move vehicles under cover immediately, as hail of this size can shatter windows and dent metal within seconds. Stay indoors and avoid travel during the evening hours, especially as storms intensify and visibility drops sharply in heavy rain.

Storms will continue tracking east overnight, with additional warnings likely as supercells evolve into a larger storm line across the region.
