Wausau, Wisconsin – A late-season cold surge will drive temperatures well below freezing across northern Wisconsin overnight, creating widespread frost and increasing the risk of lake effect snow and slick travel.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, below-normal temperatures will persist across the Upper Midwest through early next week, with northern Wisconsin running 5 to 15 degrees below seasonal averages. While precipitation remains near normal, colder air moving across Lake Superior will enhance snow chances.

Wausau is expected to drop into the mid-20s between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., with even colder readings across Rhinelander, Minocqua, and Ashland. These conditions will support widespread frost and freeze impacts, especially in rural and low-lying areas.

Lake effect snow showers are likely to develop along the Lake Superior shoreline, particularly in Iron, Ashland, and Vilas counties. Brief bursts of snow could reduce visibility along U.S. 2 and Highway 51, with minor accumulations possible in localized bands.

Residents should protect sensitive plants, prepare for freezing mornings, and use caution on untreated roads during early travel hours. This colder pattern will persist through early next week, with additional advisories possible as lake effect snow continues.
