Newark, New Jersey – A late-season cold surge will push overnight temperatures to near freezing across New Jersey, creating frost risks and the potential for slick travel during early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, below-normal temperatures will persist across the Mid-Atlantic through early next week, with New Jersey seeing readings 5 to 15 degrees below seasonal averages. While precipitation remains near normal, the colder air mass increases the likelihood of frost and isolated icy conditions.

Newark is expected to drop to near 32°F between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., with colder pockets inland across northern New Jersey, including areas along I-80 and I-287. Trenton and central regions will also see near-freezing lows, while coastal areas such as Atlantic City remain slightly milder but still chilly.

Any light precipitation that develops overnight could briefly mix with freezing rain, especially on elevated surfaces like bridges along the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, creating isolated slick spots.

Residents should protect sensitive plants, cover outdoor vegetation, and allow extra time for the morning commute. This colder pattern will persist through early next week, with additional advisories possible as freezing conditions continue.
