Atlanta, Georgia – A strong heat surge will push temperatures across Georgia and South Carolina into the upper 80s by Saturday afternoon, with rising humidity creating summer-like conditions and increasing storm chances.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, there is an 80 to 90 percent probability of above-normal temperatures across the Southeast through early next week. Central Georgia and much of South Carolina—including Atlanta, Augusta, Columbia, and Charleston—are in a high-confidence zone for sustained warmth.
Atlanta is expected to reach the upper 80s between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, with similar conditions extending east along I-20 into Augusta and Columbia. Coastal areas such as Charleston will see mid to upper 80s, with added humidity pushing heat index values higher during peak afternoon hours.
By late afternoon into the evening, Gulf and Atlantic moisture will fuel scattered showers and thunderstorms across both states. Storms may produce brief heavy rain, lightning, and wind gusts over 40 mph, especially along I-20, I-26, and I-95, potentially impacting evening travel.
Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and remain alert for rapidly changing weather late in the day. This pattern will persist through the weekend into early next week, with additional advisories likely as heat and storm chances continue.
